This secluded "adults only" hide-away may just be one of the best-kept secrets in the Dominican Republic. Hacienda Terra Taina is a small boutique hotel only 1 km from the centre of Las Terrenas on the Samaná peninsula. There are several typically beautiful tropical beaches just a short walk away, or hire a car, or a bicycle, scooter or quad to effortlessly whisk you down to the shore.

The hotel was designed by a renowned European architect, blending contemporary style with typical Caribbean elements. The courtyard lay-out around the long central pool and decking allows you to enjoy the airy yet sheltered ambience of the patio. Beyond the courtyard there are lush gardens of swaying palm trees and manicured lawns where guests are free to relax in near isolation.

The bar and lounge are typically Caribbean with open walls under a palm-thatched roof. Daily breakfast includes lots of fresh home-grown produce. Owners Matthias and Carmen are warm and friendly hosts ensuring their guests have an unforgettable and relaxing stay.

The guest bedrooms are decorated in soft neutral colours and all have queen-size double beds, air-conditioning and garden or pool views (or both). The spacious en-suite bathrooms have walk-in showers, a hair dryer and free toiletries. There are indoor and outdoor sitting areas and a fridge.

The complimentary bikes make various beaches readily accessible. To the east of Punta Popy, the long sandy beach is peaceful and back-to-nature. To the west, there is a little more activity with a few bars and restaurants, a kitesurf school and even a disco and nightclub.
